REACHING OUT
St. AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH NEWSLETTER
Summer 2007 NO 66
What Partnership?
|
It’s good to see the North Town
Partnership making front page news again if only in an article about the recent
local elections which revealed that _ some local would be politicians didn’t
seem to know of its existence. Welt they do now and the same article showed the
Partnership in a very positive -light particularly in respect of its work with
Rushmoor to make a dream come true— a really good outdoor recreational facility
for our local young people. We may make the headlines from time to time but I
suspect that there are still many in the local community who will still ask
‘What partnership?’
The North Town Partnership is a
partnership comprising local residents; local councilors and council officers
and others involved in the local community like the beat officer and
representatives from Pavilion Housing. Having been reconstituted In September
2003 to discuss the provision of a community facility in the partnership has widened its
brief to act as a forum for the discussion of community issues, and we don’t
just talk, we work to see that things get done. Some are beginning to realise
that we don’t let issues get forgotten in the hope that they might go away
which is probably what gives the Partnership its cutting edge. The Partnership
is not just a good way of working together; it means others don’t forget North Town exists!
Some issues have been around for
quite a while, for example what is going to happen about the community base?
How many more excuses can be made before its future is decided? Sometimes we
are a very frustrated group of people, sometimes we don’t get answers to our
questions, but the Partnership is largely made up of some very patient people
officials may come and go but some of us have been around like forever.
Whatever the frustrations we may feel, lets not forget our positive
achievements. Local Members of the Partnership firmly
believe in North Town’s identity is a community. We
aren’t about politics, we are about people; we affectionately regard North Town
as a village because its where we live and we want the very best for all who
live here that’s why we go on working in Partnership to make sure we get a fair
slice of the resources cake, whether that be more waste bins or more police
officers on the beat. As a parish priest I try to work for the good of the
whole community, that’s why I chair the Partnership. When the going gets tough
I have only to remember that very small group of people who, 2000 years ago,
trusting in the coming of God’s kingdom, went on to do some truly amazing
things.
Your friend and priest,
Father Keith
